Silver Metallic Astra

This nice silver Saturn Astra sedan was parked by its lonely old self in a parking lot. It seems appropriate, since Americans who own this car are a lonely bunch.

Equipped with a 1.8-liter four and a choice of a five-speed manual transmisison or a 4-speed automatic, the Opel-built Astra is a good enough car, but Americans hardly seem to care - it's been a lousy seller in the United States despite a good deal of success as an Opel in Europe and as a Vauxhall in the United Kingdom.

Unforutnately, this car - built for Saturn in Belgium - is hampered by an unfavorable exchange rate between the dollar and the euro, and Saturn - which started as a GM division that tried to build decent small cars here but ended up losing its way - has trouble of late defining brand identity. Saturn itself could by history soon, if GM doesn't find a buyer for it. Aynone who does buy Saturn could suppply it with cars from China.

The Astra is still a fine car, though, and a friend of mine in England owns the Vauxhall version.
